Are you still running Windows 10?
2026-05-04
In case you weren’t aware, Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 10 on 14th October 2025 . This means any devices that still run Windows 10 are not going to receive any more updates, including security fixes and updates.
If you are still running Windows 10 at this point, it is probably because Windows 11 is not supported on the hardware you have.
What are your options?
Replace everything with new Windows 11 machines
This works. Each computer will probably set you back somewhere in the region of £500 - £1000 for a reasonably spec’d business class computer. Likely more for higher demand applications. For a small business or charity, that is a significant outlay. Particularly if you have more than one to replace. That being said, it is probably the easiest option. There are some changes, but most users who were comfortable using Windows 10 will be able to use Windows 11.
Switch to Linux
This is the option most organisations dismiss out of hand - and it should not be.
Linux is free. The hardware requirements are low. Almost any computer capable of running Windows 10 will be able to run Linux.
However, it would be remiss of me not to to make clear that this isn’t a like-for-like swap. Whilst Linux has come a long way in the last few years, there are things that are different. This option will save you money, but may well also result in a need to invest some time in learning / training.
That being said, the gap is shrinking fast. If most of your work is done in a browser, there will likely be almost no changes. Basic document editing, web browsing, email, video calls and so on will all work without issue.
It becomes less feasible if you rely on some specialist software. The Adobe Creative suite, for example, won’t run on Linux.
Where does Lumen IT fit in?
I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all answer. What works for a ten-person charity will not necessarily work for a freelance graphic designer.
What I can do is help you assess your situation honestly and recommend a path that is practical and affordable:
- Hardware audit - start with an inventory your existing machines and work out exactly which can run Windows 11 and which can’t.
- Software check - we can work out what software you rely on. Some software will work on Linux without any difficulty. Others we might decide can be swapped out for something that serves the same purpose.
- Migration or replacement - if you decide to move to Linux (or buy new Windows machines), we can work out a plan and execute the transition with minimal disruption.
Every organisation is different. I’m happy to have a no-obligation conversation about where you are and where you might go.
